Alessandro Nesta has offered a diagnosis of AC Milan's malaise, blaming internal confusion as much as on-pitch failure for the collapse โ€” while expressing confidence that a properly structured rebuild can see them finish second as early as next season.

The former AC Milan and Italy defender spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport as the club works through its most significant reconstruction since the RedBird Capital takeover, following a fifth-place Serie A finish and the consequent loss of Champions League football for a second successive year.

"(Max) Allegri and the players have their faults, but the real problem was the internal confusion at the club. At the same time I have faith because you can restart if you put the right people in the right place and give them precise tasks and responsibilities."

He pushed back on assessments of the squad as structurally weak.

"The base is solid and strong, with great potential. The goalkeeper is good, Pavlovic has grown enormously and the midfield is decent.

"The only thing the Rossoneri absolutely need is a great central midfield."

On the managerial appointment โ€” with Oliver Glasner and Arne Slot both linked and no decision publicly confirmed โ€” Nesta was clear about the correct sequence.

"Everything must start from the sporting director. With a capable director of sport who chooses a good coach to his taste and together they define a path to achieve results, they can even do it in a short time. For me, Milan restructured in the right way can immediately finish second."
