Napoli are reportedly exploring a January move for Joshua Zirkzee after the forward’s limited opportunities at Manchester United raised fresh questions about his future.

The Serie A club have made preliminary contact with United over the Netherlands international, according to Italian reports, as they assess options to strengthen Massimiliano Allegri’s attack.

Zirkzee joined United from Bologna in the summer of 2024 but has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. During his first season, he scored seven goals and provided two assists in 49 competitive appearances. His involvement declined last season, when he managed two goals and one assist in 26 outings.

The 25-year-old has made only two Premier League appearances this season, neither as a starter, leaving him short of the regular football he needs.

Napoli are understood to be monitoring his situation closely, with the club reportedly holding preliminary discussions with United about the possibility of a transfer.

The English club are said to be open to both a permanent sale and a loan arrangement. A fee in the region of €30 million to €35 million has been reported, although no agreement has been reached.

Zirkzee remains under contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2029, meaning United are not under immediate pressure to sell. However, his lack of playing time could make a departure an attractive option for both parties if an appropriate offer emerges.

The Dutchman has already been linked with several Italian clubs. Juventus and Fiorentina are also reportedly interested, while AC Milan have previously been associated with a renewed pursuit of the former Bologna forward.

A return to Serie A could offer Zirkzee the chance to rebuild his momentum in a familiar league. His technical ability and capacity to link play have made him an appealing profile for clubs looking for more than a conventional penalty-box striker.

Napoli’s interest is also shaped by their search for additional attacking options. Allegri is keen to improve his choices up front, although the club must weigh any potential signing against its existing squad and financial commitments.

Zirkzee previously played for Bayern Munich, Parma, Anderlecht and Bologna before moving to England. His most productive period came at Bologna, where his performances helped establish him as one of the more promising forwards in Italian football.

For now, the reported contact remains preliminary. Napoli will need to decide whether to pursue the deal and agree terms with United, while the player’s own preferences will also influence any move.

With the January window approaching, Zirkzee’s future could become a significant talking point if his role at Manchester United remains unchanged.
