Napoli are working towards extending Scott McTominay's contract until 2029, with sporting director Giovanni Manna's plan to reward the Scotland international with an improved salary and a longer commitment before the World Cup begins in June.

McTominay, who turns 30 in December, is currently under contract until 2028 and earns around €3 million per season — significantly below the wages of Napoli's top earners.

Il Mattino reports the proposed extension would include a meaningful pay rise that better reflects his status within the squad.

The midfielder has been a constant presence in Antonio Conte's midfield this season despite a tendon injury that kept him out for several weeks in February and March. He returned against Cremonese on Saturday and again underlined his importance — pressing, arriving into the box and providing the physical and technical platform Napoli depend on.

A missed penalty in that fixture did nothing to change the club's thinking. Their view of McTominay remains unambiguously positive, and Manna is treating the renewal as a priority for the coming weeks.

Manchester United retain a 10 per cent sell-on clause from his £25 million sale in 2024, a figure that could prove significant if his valuation continues to rise.

Claims in Spain had linked United with a return bid of £70 million, but the club categorically denied any internal discussion of a move for their former player.

McTominay has been emphatic about his own wishes.

"My agent has not communicated with anyone regarding my future — he only speaks with me and with the club. I am extremely happy here and, as far as I am concerned, I am a Napoli player.

"The future is very important and I could see myself in Napoli for a long time. I love this place. Difficulties have been minimal, my family is happy and I'm happy."
