José Mourinho has made his support for Vinícius Júnior clear after Real Madrid's appeal against the Brazilian forward's four-match LaLiga suspension was rejected.

The punishment means Vinícius will miss Sunday's meeting with Sevilla and the upcoming El Clásico against Barcelona, alongside further league fixtures against Racing de Santander and Valencia. Real Madrid have indicated that they intend to pursue another appeal through Spain's Administrative Tribunal for Sport.

Mourinho has been outspoken about the decision, suggesting that the authorities could have imposed an even harsher penalty on the forward.

“Honestly, I expected a much longer suspension, because the people who hide behind the scenes surely wanted to punish him even more,” the Portuguese coach said.

The original ban followed Vinícius' dismissal during Real Madrid's match against Villarreal. The disciplinary committee imposed two matches for pulling Nathan Saliba's hair when the ball was not being contested, with a further two games added for his reaction to the red card.

The federation's Appeals Committee rejected Madrid's challenge on 16 October, leaving the four-match punishment in place. The club remain determined to contest the outcome, but Vinícius is currently set to miss the domestic matches specified in the ruling.

Mourinho's defence of the player extended beyond the disciplinary case. He spoke warmly about Vinícius as a person and praised the way he has continued to conduct himself despite the controversy surrounding him.

“He is a fantastic person and very easy to get along with. I spend time alone with him every day. I value him enormously because, despite everything, he keeps smiling,” Mourinho said.

The coach also suggested that Vinícius' loyalty to Real Madrid was significant given the criticism he has faced.

“If I were in his shoes, I would not be here now. I would move to a country where they respect me. But because of his loyalty to Real Madrid, he stays here,” Mourinho added.

The suspension has created an immediate selection problem for Madrid, particularly with the Barcelona fixture approaching. Vinícius remains available for Champions League matches while his domestic ban runs its course, giving Mourinho an opportunity to use him in Europe.

For now, the club's next legal challenge offers the only prospect of reducing the number of league games he will miss.
