Massimo Moratti, the former Inter Milan president responsible for the club's most successful era, has offered his assessment of the club's 21st Scudetto triumph, singling out head coach Cristian Chivu for particular praise.

Moratti also named NicolΓ² Barella as the player who has impressed him most this season.

Moratti, who turns 81 later this month and oversaw the era that produced the 2010 Treble, spoke to Corriere della Sera about the championship and Chivu's role in delivering it. The Romanian head coach β€” who played in the Treble-winning side β€” was promoted from within the club's academy structure and was considered a bold choice when handed the senior job.

"I know him very well," Moratti said. "And he has this great virtue, which is never to be taken for granted: intelligence. A deep intelligence. That of a man who knows how to adapt to his environment β€” and it means nothing that he already knows the Inter world, first as a player and then as a youth coach."

He was emphatic about Chivu's character.

"Chivu is courageous. Months ago he put himself out there, convinced of the qualities of his group. More than that β€” he made guarantees, he made promises. Promises he kept. In full. I repeat: I was absolutely convinced he would do brilliantly."

Moratti then turned to the player who has given him the most pleasure to watch in the current squad, landing on a perhaps predictable but entirely justified choice.

"Barella β€” how much he has improved. I adore him. He has added to the qualities of combativeness, resilience and running the ability to read game situations, to make the right choice and to draw on his own technique to do so."

Chivu was appointed Inter head coach last summer after several seasons coaching the club's under-19 and under-23 sides. Inter Milan confirmed the Scudetto with three rounds remaining, finishing ahead of Napoli on goal difference. It is the club's fifth league title in six years.
