Monza striker Gustavo Varela has been named Serie A's Rising Star of October and received his first Portugal senior call-up after a prolific start to the season.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding opening campaign in Italy, establishing himself as one of the league's most productive forwards since arriving from Benfica in the summer.

Varela scored five goals in five matches during October, earning him the monthly Rising Star award. His performances have also brought recognition at international level, with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus including him in his latest squad.

The striker is currently leading the Serie A scoring charts, having found the net nine times in his first nine league appearances.

His progress represents a considerable change from last season, when he spent time on loan at Gil Vicente and scored six goals across the campaign.

The move to Monza has provided an opportunity to establish himself at a higher level, and he has responded with a remarkable scoring return.

Jesus addressed Varela's inclusion during his press conference, explaining that the forward's performances and quality had convinced him to offer the young striker an opportunity.

“Regarding Varela, he is the top scorer in the Italian championship. To achieve that, you need considerable quality. Starting from that premise, I decided to give him my confidence, especially because we must not forget that he is only 21 years old,” the Portugal coach said.

Jesus also discussed Fabio Silva, another forward included in the squad, praising his recent performances and development at club level.

“He is growing at his club and has played very well in recent matches. His characteristics correspond to my idea of a striker.”

The coach also reflected on the advantage of working with a group containing several players already familiar with his methods, pointing to the importance of trust and continuity within the squad.

“The team had already demonstrated its technical and tactical abilities, as well as a strong bond between the players. The fact that many of them had already worked with me gave me an advantage.

“My real strength is that the players believe in the journey, the philosophy and the desire to continue winning.”

For Varela, the international recognition comes at a particularly important stage of his career. Having moved from Benfica to Monza after his loan spell in Portugal, he has quickly become one of the most talked-about young forwards in Italian football.

His October performances earned him individual recognition, while his first senior call-up provides an opportunity to translate his club form onto the international stage.

At just 21, Varela has already made a significant impression in Serie A. Jesus's decision to include him suggests that his performances have not gone unnoticed in Portugal.
