The 23-year-old had joined Monaco on a season-long loan from FC Barcelona last July, with an agreed option to buy inserted from the outset. He scored 12 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions during his first season in the Principality, convincing the club to exercise that clause without hesitation.
Barcelona will receive the €11m fee immediately and retain a sell-on percentage of any future transfer — a clause the Catalan club routinely insert in deals involving academy products. The financial benefit to Barcelona extends beyond the transfer fee itself.
Fati's restructured contract had been costing the club approximately €8.6m gross per season, a commitment that now falls away entirely, giving the club significant additional room under their wage structure as they prepare for the summer window.
Fati was once regarded as the most exciting young player to emerge from La Masia in a generation. He made his senior debut for Barcelona at 16, scored on his first full start, and became the second-youngest player to score in La Liga. In November 2020, aged 18, he suffered a serious knee injury that required surgery and ruled him out for the better part of two seasons.
He never fully recovered his momentum at Barcelona after that. A 2023-24 loan to Brighton & Hove Albion produced four goals in 27 appearances. His final season at the Catalan club before the Monaco move yielded only 11 appearances without a single goal.
Monaco, who finished seventh in Ligue 1, will not be in European competition next season — a factor that gave Fati pause before eventually accepting the permanent terms. Sevilla, reportedly backed by incoming owner Sergio Ramos, had also expressed interest in bringing him back to Spain, but the Monaco move has now been confirmed.
