The Barcelona full-back's name resurfaced in talks between Milan and agent Jorge Mendes after he lost his guaranteed starting spot following the arrival of several significant new faces in that area of the pitch, but the club have decided against pursuing him, according to Matteo Moretto — Milan were unwilling to spend more than €40m on the position.
That leaves Pervis Estupiñán as the likely long-term option on the left after a proposed move to Aston Villa fell through. Ruben Amorim rates the Ecuadorian, and keeping him is a far cheaper solution than sourcing a new signing; Estupiñán made 22 appearances last season, scoring once, including a crucial goal in the derby against Inter.
AC Milan's business at the other end of the pitch is more advanced. Christopher Nkunku does not fit into Amorim's plans and has been left off the club's official list of squad numbers for the season, alongside Fikayo Tomori and Santiago Giménez, confirming he is available for transfer.
Newcastle United have moved ahead of RB Leipzig in the race for the forward, according to Fabrizio Romano, though the Premier League club have yet to reach an agreement with Milan. Galatasaray, who were also offered the player, turned the move down.
The final obstacle is Nkunku's own approval. The 28-year-old has not yet accepted a return to the Premier League and remains unconvinced by Newcastle's project, though with the transfer window closing in the coming days, a resolution to his Milan future is expected imminently.
Milan signed the France international from Chelsea last summer for a reported €37m plus bonuses, hoping he could rediscover the form that brought 70 goals for Leipzig, but he managed only eight goals and three assists in 35 appearances during a modest debut season under Massimiliano Allegri.
