The 20-year-old French midfielder travelled to Tyneside on Wednesday after the two clubs struck an agreement, and he is now set to undergo a medical before finalising the move. Bamba would become Newcastle United's fourth signing of the summer, arriving after the club missed out on Johan Manzambi, who instead opted to join Aston Villa.
The France Under-20 international broke into Monaco's first team last season, making 25 appearances across Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Champions League. Newcastle had also been linked with Monaco's Senegal international Lamine Camara, but have turned their attention to Bamba instead, viewing the defensive-minded midfielder as the more natural fit for Eddie Howe's system.
Bamba, who typically plays as a holding midfielder, would add fresh depth in the middle of the park following the departure of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer. His arrival would continue what has become a clear pattern in Newcastle's recruitment this window, with the club focused on signing players of strong potential and resale value from outside the Premier League rather than competing for the biggest, most expensive names on the market.
He would follow goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims, winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim and fellow midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax through the door this summer, making him the fourth player aged 20 or under to join the club since the window opened - underlining just how youth-focused Newcastle's approach has been this year as they look to build for the future while also strengthening the current squad.
The move also continues a busy summer of incoming and outgoing business for Newcastle, who have had to work hard to reshape their midfield after also losing Anthony Gordon to Barcelona earlier in the window. Eddie Howe's side had previously seen a bid for Tottenham's Lucas Bergvall rejected, with Nottingham Forest now believed to be leading the race for that deal.
Bamba's arrival, once confirmed, would give Howe a genuine like-for-like option to replace some of the physical presence and ball-winning ability Tonali provided, while also adding a long-term profile the club can continue to develop over the coming seasons.
