McKenna emerges as leading Fulham candidate as Silva era ends at Craven Cottage

Kieran McKenna has emerged as a prominent candidate to become Fulham's next manager, with the Northern Irishman understood to be on the west London club's list as they begin their first managerial search since returning to the Premier League in 2022.

Marco Silva confirmed his departure on Tuesday after five years at Craven Cottage, publishing an open letter to supporters following the club's announcement that he will join Benfica as head coach.

Silva's exit opened the vacancy after the 48-year-old guided Fulham from Championship relegation candidates to a consistent top-half Premier League presence.

McKenna, 38, recently guided Ipswich Town to second place in the Championship, securing an immediate return to the top flight after the club had been relegated a year earlier. His achievements at Portman Road generated significant interest from Premier League clubs and he has been associated with several vacancies in recent months.

He was in contention for the Chelsea managerial role in 2024 following Mauricio Pochettino's departure. Manchester United also weighed a potential return for him β€” he served on the coaching staff at Old Trafford β€” around the same time as the review of Erik ten Hag's position. More recently he was linked with the Bournemouth vacancy before the Cherries confirmed Marco Rose as Andoni Iraola's successor.

Fulham are also reported to be considering former Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who was sacked last Saturday following a turbulent second season at Anfield, as well as Thomas Frank, who left Brentford at the end of the season.

Silva's record at Craven Cottage was one of steady, accumulative progress. He won promotion in his first season and never finished lower than 13th across four subsequent Premier League campaigns, with back-to-back 11th-place finishes in the last two seasons.
