The midfielder, born in March 2008, finished a first-time volley from the edge of the area in the 57th minute, after a rebound fell to him, to make it 1-1. It was the first goal Valencia had scored at Mestalla in the league this season, and it ended a home drought of 322 minutes.
Speaking after the match, as quoted by Marca, Mayol said: “I am very happy about the goal. But it is a pity we could not take the three points, but I think the team's work has been spectacular.”
He said debuting at Mestalla was “a dream” for any player formed in the academy, and added: “I cannot describe what I felt when I scored the goal. It was a cluster of sensations.”
The goal came only days after his official debut. Valencia's interim coach Óscar Sánchez, who took over after Carlos Corberán was sacked on 13 September, picked him in midfield for the 1-0 win at Deportivo Alavés on Tuesday, making him the first player born in 2008 to appear officially for the club. Mayol played all 90 minutes.
Sánchez explained the decision to El Desmarque afterwards: “His performance is what leads me to put him in. His abilities. I know him well. There was no need to say much to him. I told him ‘you know what I want, go in, enjoy, compete, your team-mates are going to help you’.
"Now we have to be patient, we have to give him continuity. He has to keep that desire to improve that he has.”
Mayol's path helps explain that confidence. He spent more than a decade in Levante's youth system before joining Valencia in 2025, won a title with the Juvenil A side, according to Marca, and stepped up to Valencia Mestalla, where Sánchez was in charge. In May the club extended his contract to 2029, with a release clause reported at €15 million.
Valencia went on to lose 3-2 to Real Sociedad after goals from Luka Sučić, a Carlos Soler penalty, a Luken Beitia own goal and a stoppage-time strike from Ander Barrenetxea. Mayol, though, preferred to talk about the group, and Marca said he celebrated at the final whistle with fellow academy products Aimar Blázquez and David Otorbi.
“Everyone in the dressing room is aware that this is the way,” he said.
He also gave the academy credit for his rise: “The academy is there to help the first team.”
