Wirtz moved to Anfield for a reported €125 million last year, but has yet to deliver consistently on the expectations attached to that fee. His technical quality remains clear, although a lack of goals and assists has brought increasing criticism.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has been particularly direct in his assessment following the club’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.
“I think Liverpool have given him enough chances, and I think he needs to be taken out of the team,” Carragher said.
Wirtz’s future is not settled, and his contract runs until 2030. However, speculation about a possible separation next summer has emerged as the playmaker struggles to establish himself consistently in the Premier League.
Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona have previously been linked with the 22-year-old. German record international Lothar Matthäus has now identified another possible suitor, suggesting Chelsea could consider a move.
“There are clubs in Spain that would be interested, and another club in England, namely Chelsea, with his former coach Xabi Alonso,” Matthäus wrote in his Sky column.
A reunion with Alonso would offer an obvious narrative. Wirtz enjoyed the most productive period of his career at Bayer Leverkusen under the Spanish coach, developing into one of Europe’s most influential attacking midfielders.
Alonso’s familiarity with Wirtz’s strengths could appeal to both player and manager if Chelsea’s reported interest develops into a concrete pursuit. The midfielder’s ability to create chances, operate between the lines and influence attacking transitions remains a major part of his appeal.
Nevertheless, there is no confirmation that Chelsea have made an offer or that Liverpool are prepared to sell. Wirtz’s long contract gives the English club a strong position, and any deal would likely require a substantial financial commitment.
For now, the links reflect the uncertainty surrounding Wirtz’s adaptation to English football rather than an imminent transfer. Liverpool will hope he can turn his promising moments into sustained performances, while interested clubs will continue to assess whether a move could offer him the platform to rediscover his best form.
