The Manchester United defender had been hoping to add another major tournament to a lengthy international career, only to discover he would not be travelling with the Three Lions this summer.
Maguire spent much of the past decade as a regular figure in England's defence and played every match of the country's last two World Cup campaigns. The 33-year-old admitted the news came as a shock when Tuchel informed him of the decision through a FaceTime call.
Speaking on The Rest is Football, Maguire explained that the England manager had personally contacted players before announcing his final squad.
"He FaceTimes everyone.
"Yeah, it's quite an awkward call.
"It's quite a unique way to do it. It makes it harder probably for himself to see our reactions and things like that."
Maguire was one of the standout omissions from Tuchel's selection and has previously said he was left shocked and gutted by the decision. His family also reacted strongly, with the disappointment felt beyond the dressing room after England's squad was confirmed.
The defender's absence continues a frustrating spell with the national team. After missing Euro 2024 through injury, Maguire has found opportunities harder to come by and has made only a handful of appearances since returning to contention.
Those limited chances included appearances during the spring international window under Tuchel. Despite that involvement, Maguire revealed he received little clarity when he asked why he had been overlooked.
"He really said that he can't really give me an excuse.
"I think he said that he's gone with the four lads that he got through the qualifying in the autumn camps where he felt like they did well during those six games.
"But he did say that he can't really give me an excuse.
"But listen, that's football. It was tough to take."
Maguire has won 66 England caps and featured prominently during some of the national team's strongest tournament performances of recent years. He played a key role in England's run to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and was again a regular starter four years later in Qatar.
With Tuchel now contracted through to Euro 2028, questions have naturally emerged about whether Maguire will have another opportunity to feature at a World Cup. The defender acknowledged that reality while reflecting on what missing this tournament could mean for his future.
"I'm 33 now, so 37 at the next World Cup. It looks far away. I wanted to go, not just play. I wasn't demanding to go and start the games.
"I'd have been happy to play one minute as long as I was there with the lads.
"So no, it was disappointing."
Whether another major tournament arrives for Maguire or not, his comments underline just how much representing England still matters to one of the most experienced players of his generation.
