Manchester United rule out Onana return as wage problem complicates sale

Manchester United have no intention of reintegrating André Onana into their squad next season, with work already under way to find a buyer for the goalkeeper despite the complications his rising salary presents.

According to ESPN, United's stance is clear: Senne Lammens has established himself as first choice since joining the club last summer, and Onana will not be given the opportunity to challenge for the number one shirt. The Belgian's arrival effectively ended Onana's time at Old Trafford before it had been formally confirmed as such.

Onana joined United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 for a fee of around £47.5 million. His two-year spell was plagued by high-profile errors that damaged both his reputation and the club's results, and head coach Ruben Amorim sanctioned his loan move to Trabzonspor in the summer of 2025.

The 30-year-old Cameroonian has largely rebuilt his standing in Turkey. He made 33 appearances for Trabzonspor this season and kept six clean sheets, and he had reportedly hoped to return to Carrington and fight for his place under Michael Carrick. Those hopes have been extinguished.

The sticking point in finding him a new club is financial. Onana's salary at United was reduced this season due to the club's absence from the Champions League, but Carrick's side have now secured a return to European football's top tier. Under the terms of his contract, which runs until 2028, his wages will increase accordingly — complicating United's ability to negotiate a sale without absorbing a significant portion of his earnings.

United are seeking around €45-50 million for Onana, a figure Trabzonspor's vice-president Zeyyat Kafkas confirmed publicly is beyond the Turkish club's means.

"As the figure from Manchester United for the purchase of André Onana is in the range of €45-50 million, our president has sincerely informed the community in line with Trabzonspor's realities. I don't think this information affected Onana at all. Because Onana's thinking is that if it's not England, he wants to continue at a club in Europe. His family thinks the same way."

Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan has nonetheless expressed a desire to keep Onana if the conditions allow.

"Onana's career is already established. We like him. He has a certain plan for his career. If the conditions are right, we want him to stay. The final decision will be Onana's."

Saudi Pro League side Neom SC have also been linked. Backup goalkeeper Altay Bayındır is expected to leave Old Trafford separately, with Beşiktaş understood to hold an agreement in principle with the Turk for this summer.
