The 25-year-old's existing deal was due to expire in 2027, bringing him closer to the final year of his contract, but negotiations handled by super-agent Rafaela Pimenta โ who also represents Erling Haaland โ have concluded successfully. Formalities are still to be completed before the announcement is made official.
Foden came on as a substitute during Monday's 3-3 draw at Everton, a result that left Manchester City five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, with a game in hand remaining. It was a familiar role in a season in which he has started just five of the club's last 21 league matches.
The decision to extend his contract represents a clear statement of faith from City, who will lose Bernardo Silva on a free transfer this summer and are facing uncertainty over the future of manager Pep Guardiola. With those departures looming, Foden's continued presence carries added importance.
Despite 10 goals in 46 appearances across all competitions this season, his output has faded sharply since the turn of the year โ he has not scored since 14 December and has provided one assist in 2026.
His England prospects are similarly uncertain. Head coach Thomas Tuchel has made clear that a place in his World Cup squad is not guaranteed, despite Foden being the only player to start both fixtures in England's final pre-tournament camp.
"He tried everything," Tuchel said last month. "He was excellent in camp but he struggles to show it on the pitch."
Foden made his City debut at 17 under Guardiola and has gone on to make 365 appearances for the club, winning six Premier League titles, the Champions League and two FA Cups.
