Ibragimov, 18, was born in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan in southern Russia, before his family relocated to England when he was a child. He joined Sheffield United's academy before moving to Manchester United in 2021, where he has captained the under-18 side and developed into one of the most talked-about young forwards at Carrington. He signed his first professional contract in April 2025 and has featured for the United under-21s as well as the under-18s.
He had previously represented England at under-15 and under-16 level and had not publicly committed to either nation. The Russian Football Union's decision to name him in a 36-man provisional squad for the friendlies brought the question to a head, notably without informing Manchester United โ a process that drew criticism from those at the club.
The controversy surrounding the call-up centres on Russia's continued ban from all competitive international football imposed by FIFA and UEFA in February 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine.
By accepting, Ibragimov commits himself to a programme of friendlies only, with no World Cup or European Championship football possible under current sanctions. The political dimension of the decision has provoked strong reactions.
But the personal dimension is equally significant. Ibragimov is proud of his Dagestani heritage and feels a genuine bond with Russia through his family and upbringing. His elder brother Ibragim is a professional mixed martial arts fighter, and the family are personally close to Khabib Nurmagomedov, the legendary UFC fighter and one of the most celebrated athletes in Dagestani history. For those raised with those cultural roots, the pull of national identity is not reducible to footballing calculations.
He was part of the United squad that reached the FA Youth Cup final this season, losing to Manchester City. Despite the youth-level loss, his development across the 2025-26 campaign has cemented his standing as one of the most exciting teenage forwards in the academy.
United have not commented publicly on Ibragimov's decision to accept the Russia call-up, though their lack of prior notification from the Russian FA is understood to have been noted with displeasure internally.
