The 18-year-old Denmark youth international has managed just seven Premier League appearances since arriving at Old Trafford from Arsenal in the autumn of 2024, with senior opportunities proving hard to come by even after Manchester United's involvement was confined largely to domestic competition last term.
He instead spent the majority of the campaign with the club's Under-21s, scoring 15 goals in 31 appearances to earn recognition as one of the more prolific forwards in the age group.
Manchester United confirmed on their official website that Willem II have taken the striker on loan through the end of the season, with the move completed on the Dutch transfer deadline after the Premier League window had already closed in England. No purchase option was included in the agreement, according to Fabrizio Romano, meaning United retain full control over Obi's long-term future.
Willem II, back in the Eredivisie after promotion last season, have endured a difficult start to the new campaign without a win from their opening three fixtures. Obi will compete with Devin Haen for a starting berth up front as he looks to convert first-team minutes into the kind of form that persuaded Arsenal to hand him a scholarship in 2022 following his move from FC Copenhagen.
Obi scored ten goals in a 14-3 win over Liverpool for Arsenal's Under-16s and later netted 32 times in 18 games for the Gunners' Under-18s, form that had made him one of the most sought-after teenage talents in English academy football before his switch to Old Trafford.
His move to United was viewed as a coup at the time given Arsenal's reluctance to lose him, and he was handed his senior debut relatively early in his first season at the club.
However, first-team chances dried up as United's squad options in attack were bolstered, leaving the teenager searching for a route back into regular contention. Eligible to represent Denmark, Nigeria or England at senior level, Obi has so far committed his international future to Denmark's youth set-up, having progressed through the age groups after initially being capped by England at Under-16 level.
The striker is looking forward to his time at Willem II: "This is a great step in my career. I want to play as much as possible, gain experience, and further develop myself.
"I will work hard for the team and hope to be able to make an important contribution."
Technical Director Freek Heerkens also explained Obi’s arrival: "Chido is a young, talented striker who is at an important moment in his development. He has been able to develop in a top-level sports environment at Manchester United over the past few years and is now eager to gain experience.
"We can help him with that, and the Eredivisie is an excellent platform for it. At the same time, with Chido, our squad is bringing in a striker who can be of value to the team with his qualities."
The loan gives United's coaching staff the chance to monitor his progress from a distance, with the expectation that a strong campaign in the Netherlands could put him back in contention for involvement at Old Trafford next season.
