Man City face claims of shock 10-year UEFA ban

Manchester City’s ongoing financial case has prompted fresh speculation about possible European sanctions, with one report claiming the club could face an exclusion lasting between seven and ten years if its appeal fails.

The claim was attributed to Colombian sports journalist César Augusto Londoño, of Radio Caracol and someone who boasts over 1m followers on X. According to the report, the potential punishment would prevent City from competing in the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League during the period of exclusion.

However, no official UEFA decision confirming such a sanction has been announced. The claim should therefore be treated as speculation rather than an established punishment.

Manchester City have challenged the verdict relating to alleged financial rule breaches in the Premier League. The independent commission found the club guilty in 114 of 115 cases, according to reporting on the ruling, while the club has maintained its position and pursued an appeal.

The case concerns alleged breaches over several seasons and has raised the possibility of substantial consequences for City. Potential outcomes discussed in reporting include financial penalties, points deductions and other domestic sanctions, depending on the legal process and any eventual findings.

A European ban would have major sporting and commercial implications. Exclusion from UEFA competitions would remove the club from some of football’s most lucrative tournaments, affecting prize money, broadcast income and opportunities to compete for major honours.

But the Premier League proceedings and UEFA disciplinary processes are separate matters. A verdict in one case does not automatically establish that a second body will impose a particular sanction, and any possible action would need to be supported by the relevant rules and a formal decision.

The report also suggested that a ruling on City’s appeal might not arrive until the middle or latter part of January 2027. That timetable has not been confirmed through an official announcement and should not be treated as a fixed date.

Until the appeal process concludes, the eventual consequences remain uncertain. The seven-to-ten-year exclusion claim is particularly severe and currently lacks public confirmation from UEFA.

City’s immediate position is therefore unchanged by the speculation. Any future punishment will depend on the outcome of the appeal and whether a competent governing body subsequently announces further proceedings or sanctions.
