Madibo, 29, was shown a straight red card in the 54th minute of Qatar's 6-0 defeat to Canada in Vancouver on June 18 — the host nation's first-ever World Cup victory. FIFA confirmed the suspension is for serious foul play and is subject to appeal through the FIFA Appeal Committee.
Koné, 24, was stretchered from the field and underwent surgery in Vancouver shortly after the match. The Sassuolo midfielder, who had previously played for Watford, will miss the remainder of the tournament. He later posted on Instagram: "You can't even imagine how grateful I am to everyone who reached out and that has me in their prayers."
Madibo was visibly distressed after the challenge and apologised to Koné in person before leaving Vancouver. He visited Koné in hospital in the days that followed, a gesture confirmed by photographs published by the Qatar Football Association.
The ban does not affect Canada's tournament, but would have ruled Madibo out for the duration of any further Qatar matches. Qatar were eliminated from Group B on Wednesday after losing 3-1 to Bosnia-Herzegovina. It is the second successive World Cup in which Qatar, as a host nation, have been knocked out in the group stage — they suffered the same fate at the 2022 tournament on home soil in Doha.
Canada, who reached the knockout stage for the first time in their men's World Cup history, finished as Group B runners-up after a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland. They face the Group A runners-up in the last 32.
The five-match suspension is one of the most severe handed out at a World Cup in recent years, though it falls short of the nine-match ban Luis Suárez received for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 tournament.
