Agent Simone Rondanini told Tuttomercatoweb that despite the disappointment of Bologna's failure to qualify for European football, the 28-year-old has continued to develop and is now prepared for a step up.
"Obviously, there's a bit of disappointment, because since he's been at Bologna, the team has consistently achieved important goals," Rondanini said.
"Personally, though, I think he's continued to grow, and I think this has been especially evident in the final games of the season."
Asked directly about a possible move to England, Rondanini confirmed the chapter at Bologna is effectively closed. While acknowledging the approach from Sunderland in 2025 โ which ultimately came to nothing โ he indicated this summer would be different.
"Bologna is his home," the agent said. "As we know, there were already some significant opportunities last year, but ultimately no agreement was reached. I believe the boy is now ready for a new challenge, so we'll carefully analyze the market and see if the conditions are right for everyone this summer."
Lucumi joined Bologna from Genk in August 2022 and has established himself as one of Serie A's more consistent centre-backs since, playing primarily on the left side of a back three or back four. A Colombia international, he made over a hundred appearances for the Rossoblu and contributed to seasons in which the club punched well above their weight.
Sunderland had pushed hard for him last summer and submitted a formal offer, but Bologna held firm. With Lucumi now in the final weeks of his contract, the Italian club face the prospect of losing him for nothing unless a deal is concluded quickly.
Tottenham are one of several clubs understood to be tracking the situation, with manager Roberto De Zerbi seeking reinforcements at centre-back as part of a wider summer rebuild following the club's near-relegation from the Premier League.
Bologna's failure to qualify for Europe makes retaining the defender significantly harder. The player's desire for a new challenge appears firm, and with his agent now publicly signalling availability, a resolution is expected before the start of pre-season.
