Giovani Lo Celso scored a direct free-kick on his first World Cup appearance as Argentina beat Jordan 3-1, taking the man of the match award before dismissing River Plate exit speculation.

Lo Celso played 60 minutes as Lionel Scaloni's side sealed their place in the last 16 with a perfect nine points from nine, setting up a round of 32 clash against Cabo Verde.

He spoke warmly about the personal milestone of scoring on what was effectively a competitive World Cup debut, having been part of the 2018 squad without playing and missing the 2022 tournament entirely through injury.

"A very great emotion, more than anything because of the journey," Lo Celso said.

"Making my World Cup debut with a goal is very exciting. What happened today is unforgettable."

He was equally direct when the subject of River Plate came up, making clear his commitment to Betis and to Argentina's tournament.

"This is not the moment to talk about that and nor do I think it is something that is going to happen," Lo Celso said. "I have a contract at Betis, I am very happy and I am 100 per cent focused on the World Cup and on what it means to represent this shirt. Something very beautiful lies ahead."

Lo Celso is contracted at Real Betis until June 2028, a detail that adds weight to his dismissal of the River Plate speculation. His display against Jordan โ€” a goal and the match award in his first start of the tournament โ€” will only sharpen the debate about his future, but for now his answer is unambiguous.
