Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is available for selection again after recovering from a long-term muscle injury sustained earlier this season in pre-season.

Manager Andoni Iraola confirmed on Monday that the 29-year-old centre-back is in contention to make his comeback when Liverpool host Tottenham in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.

"He's training with the team now. I expect him to be available tomorrow, and then it's just a question of how many minutes he can play and what's best to do," Iraola said.

Gomez has been sidelined since sustaining a muscle injury during Liverpool's pre-season friendly against Sunderland in late July, an issue that has kept him out of every competitive fixture so far this season.

He has not featured in a single competitive match this season as a result, but is now poised to make his return in Tuesday's third-round tie against Roberto De Zerbi's Tottenham, which kicks off at 9pm at Anfield.

Gomez's comeback provides a timely boost for Iraola, whose defensive options have been stretched by a number of other long-term absentees already this season, including Federico Chiesa, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni.

The centre-back, who can also play at right-back, is expected to be eased back into action given the length of his lay-off, with the Spaniard likely to manage his minutes carefully in the coming weeks as he builds his match sharpness.

Liverpool head into the fixture in good league form, and Iraola is expected to rotate his squad heavily for the domestic cup tie, with Gomez's return offering another option at the back regardless of whether he starts or comes off the bench.

Tottenham, by contrast, arrive at Anfield still searching for their first win of the season, having failed to score in any of their opening four Premier League fixtures under new manager Roberto De Zerbi.
