The Liverpool Echo reported that BetVictor initially listed the former Liverpool captain at 4/1, with Dave Challinor, Rob Edwards and Sean Dyche at 6/1. By Monday, however, BetVictor had moved Rob Edwards ahead in the market, while Gerrard remained at 4/1. The odds do not confirm that Gerrard is in talks with the club.
Burnley announced Hayen’s departure after a difficult start to the Championship season. The Belgian had been appointed in the summer but managed only one league win from 12 matches, leaving the Clarets in the relegation zone after their drop from the Premier League.
Gerrard has been without a managerial job since leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in January 2025. Before that, he coached Aston Villa and Rangers, winning the Scottish Premiership with the Glasgow club in 2021.
Gerrard was linked with Burnley during the summer, when the club sought a successor to Scott Parker, but Hayen was appointed instead. Gerrard has since focused on broadcasting with TNT Sports.
His own comments earlier this month suggested he was content with life away from the dugout. Speaking on the Open Goal podcast, Gerrard said:
“At the moment I am happy, I am doing TV with TNT. I have signed a new deal. I have got some other bits and bobs that I do, some commercial stuff.
“I became a grandad a year ago. I'm loving being around the family, I get enough time off. My work life balance is great. I've had quite a few offers and chats with teams and stuff but at the moment I am really happy with what I am doing.”
Gerrard’s title-winning spell at Rangers remains the strongest achievement of his coaching career, while his time at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq was less successful. Whether he wants to return now, and whether Burnley view him as the right candidate, remains unresolved.
For now, he is one of several names associated with the vacancy, with the 4/1 price putting him among the contenders rather than confirming a move.
