Speaking to ESPN at Virgil's Legacy Trophy, the youth tournament he organises each year, Van Dijk made clear the topic was off limits for now.
"I thought we weren't going to ask questions about Oranje," he said on Sunday. "But you'll find that out soon enough."
The Liverpool captain met with Netherlands coach Xavi last week, who was present for Liverpool's Champions League opener against Atlético Madrid. Van Dijk will learn on Friday whether he has been included in the squad for next week's Nations League fixtures against Germany and Greece.
Van Dijk had harboured doubts about his Oranje future after Euro 2024, before Ronald Koeman persuaded him to continue, a decision that saw him feature at this year's World Cup, where the Netherlands were eliminated in the last 16. His next chapter under Xavi, who succeeded Koeman as head coach this summer, remains to be resolved.
The Netherlands captain did speak at length about the tournament that carries his name, describing the effort involved in organising it around his club commitments.
"We played yesterday afternoon with Liverpool, I have to train again later this afternoon and I'm here now," he told Brabants Dagblad. "That says enough about how important this is to me, doesn't it?"
Van Dijk said his main hope was to pass something on to the young players taking part.
"The life of a 12 or 13-year-old is very turbulent, but at the same time you also see players of 16 sometimes already making their professional debut," he said. "So who knows, maybe we'll see boys here this weekend who in three years will win the Champions League, maybe even score the winner in the final. That would be beautiful."
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard attended the event in Tilburg in person, while Frenkie de Jong, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Thierry Henry sent video messages of support for the young talents taking part.
Van Dijk has captained the Netherlands since 2018 and remains a first-choice pick at centre-back for Liverpool under Andoni Iraola, but questions over his long-term international role have grown as Xavi looks to shape his own squad heading toward the next European Championship. The Nations League double-header against Germany and Greece will offer an early indication of where the 35-year-old stands in the new coach's plans.
