Wirtz, who joined in a potential £116 million deal from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, has no goals and just one assist in five games this season, prompting renewed debate over his best position both at club and international level.
New Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp had called for less pressure to be placed on the 23-year-old amid growing expectation back home. Wirtz was rested from Liverpool's midweek Carabao Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur but is expected to start Sunday's Premier League trip to Bournemouth.
"He should be judged like everybody else, whether he plays well or doesn't play well," Iraola said on Friday. "Mostly I always say how does the team play when you are on the pitch? I am very happy with Florian, I rate him very highly, he understands what we need from him. He is trying to help in every aspect of the game.
"Obviously we want him to have assists and goals also, but he is helping us in a lot of different areas. We could give him some rest the other day that I think he needed."
Iraola also discussed Bradley Barcola, who is pushing for a recall on Sunday as he targets a second Premier League start since his £123 million move from Paris Saint-Germain.
"The more times he plays the better he will become," Iraola said. "He has come straight away without pre-season minutes but in a good shape. Like all the signings coming from overseas, he needs some time to adjust to the rhythm of the Premier League. But he is very used to playing high-level games and I see him in a good place."
Rio Ngumoha's second England call-up, for Nations League fixtures against Spain, Croatia and Czechia, also drew praise from his club manager.
"It's very deserved," Iraola said. "The other day, for example, against Spurs he probably didn't have his best start to the game but I like how he came back from that. He lost a couple of duels at the beginning. Udogie is a very strong player.
"But after, he did his job. In the first two goals, he appears... He has to still adapt to the rhythm of the league because he is still very young, he has just turned 18. But has the quality to be involved in those kind of plays and I'm liking especially his attitude, because he's not like 'I prefer to play here'. He's ready to do what we need."
Liverpool have no fresh injury concerns, with Federico Chiesa continuing to join long-term absentees Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley on the sidelines.
