Rafael Leão has publicly declared his desire to leave AC Milan and named the Premier League as his preferred destination.

It is the clearest statement yet from a player whose relationship with the club and its supporters has deteriorated significantly following a season in which AC Milan finished fifth in Serie A without Champions League qualification.

The 26-year-old Portugal international, who scored nine goals and added three assists in 29 league appearances, spoke to Sport TV in Lisbon with unusual candour about where his career needs to go.

"I have already won two titles in Italy and have been there for a while. The league is developing, but for my style of football I think the Premier League or La Liga would make better use of my talent as a player."

He was specific about the Premier League.

"If an opportunity in the Premier League were to arise, I would be very happy. I think I can measure myself against the players there, who maintain a very high level. Playing in such a league really brings out the best in a player."

Leão has been linked with Manchester United, Arsenal and Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, with Chelsea also identified as a potential suitor.

His £175m release clause expires in early July — after which Milan would need to negotiate directly. The club's valuation stands at approximately €50m given the difficult season and the financial pressure created by their failure to qualify for the Champions League for a second successive year.

Leão joined Milan from Lille in 2019. He remains contracted until the summer of 2028, but the combination of his public statements, his poor relationship with sections of the support and the club's need to raise transfer funds makes a sale this summer increasingly likely.
