Sunderland maintained their unbeaten start to the Europa League with a 1-1 draw at Lech Poznań, but Régis Le Bris believes his side can take more from the match after failing to turn a promising start into victory.

Timur Tutierov gave the visitors an immediate advantage, heading home Nilson Angulo’s cross in the second minute for his first senior goal for Sunderland. The Black Cats created further opportunities but could not establish a two-goal cushion, and Leo Bengtsson equalised for the Polish hosts in the 70th minute.

Le Bris felt his team began well but allowed Lech to grow into the contest after the opening goal.

“We started really well,” Le Bris said. “We expected the atmosphere and their style of play.

“After the first goal, they showed they had the quality to play through our block and create chances. We deserved to score the second goal, but we didn’t, and then they came into the game.”

The Sunderland head coach identified the team’s pressing as an area that needed attention, while insisting that the players should continue to pursue the proactive approach he wants to establish.

“We need to be balanced in every phase of the game and we weren’t clean in our mid-press,” he added.

“It is a question of details and confidence sometimes. We want to stay true to our identity, be proactive and press when it is on to do it.

“We want to press high, but we are learning.”

Tutierov’s early contribution was a positive for Le Bris, with the young forward rewarded for his movement and work rate. The goal came during only his fourth appearance for Sunderland, and offered another encouraging sign of his development.

“Timur showed tonight that he is a good striker and a very hard worker,” Le Bris said.

“He is really well connected with the team and good at running in behind. He was tired at the end, but he had this opportunity and scored.”

Le Bris also acknowledged the atmosphere at the Enea Stadion, where the home support helped Lech respond after falling behind.

“The atmosphere was really nice,” he added. “We appreciated this one. It was really powerful with their fans.”

Sunderland will be disappointed not to have taken all three points after their bright start, but remain unbeaten in the competition. Le Bris’s challenge is to turn that encouraging European form into more complete performances, with better control after scoring and greater precision in the press.
