LaLiga return looms as Fábio Silva set to leave Dortmund

Fábio Silva could leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, with the Portugal international struggling for game time under Niko Kovač last season.

The 23-year-old was handed only seven Bundesliga starts by the Dortmund coach last season, leaving him on the periphery of Kovač's plans.

According to Rudy Galetti, suitors are not lacking. Five LaLiga clubs have shown interest in the forward, who left a good impression during his loan spell at UD Las Palmas. That quintet is made up of Real Sociedad, Villarreal, Real Betis, Espanyol and Celta de Vigo.

Borussia Dortmund signed Silva from Wolverhampton Wanderers last August for a fee of €22.5 million plus a further €4 million in variables, with the forward putting pen to paper on a contract running until 2030. Despite the investment, he made just 39 appearances in all competitions last season, managing three goals and seven assists across only 1,181 minutes of action, and was unable to establish himself as a regular starter for the Bundesliga runners-up.

Silva's best form in recent years came during his loan spell at Las Palmas, where he scored 10 goals in La Liga, a run of form that also played a part in his rise back into contention for the Portugal squad. Before his move to Dortmund, he had also spent loan spells at Anderlecht, PSV and Rangers following his initial switch to Wolves from Porto for €40 million.

A return to Spain is understood to be an attractive option for the forward as he looks for a fresh start after a difficult year in Germany. Dortmund had hoped Silva would provide competition and cover for Serhou Guirassy in attack, but the forward struggled to adapt to Kovač's system and was frequently used only as a substitute across the campaign.

With Dortmund keen to reshape their attack and Silva short of regular football, a departure this summer appears increasingly likely, with Spain once again emerging as his most probable destination. The presence of five interested LaLiga clubs suggests Dortmund should have no shortage of offers to consider once formal talks begin.
