Ibrahima Konate has informed his Liverpool teammates that his decision to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June is final, with Real Madrid the leading contenders to sign the France international.

The 27-year-old centre-back joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for ยฃ36 million and leaves having won the Premier League title, the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups across 183 appearances. His five-year deal expires on June 30 and no agreement on an extension was reached despite months of negotiations.

RMC Sport reported that Konate held a meeting with close teammates in which he confirmed the departure is happening regardless of what is offered to him at this stage. The development came on the same day Liverpool dismissed Arne Slot as manager.

As recently as April 19, Konate had spoken of his desire to stay.

"For sure, there is a big chance I'm here next season. This is what I always wanted. For a long time we have spoken with the club and we are now close to an agreement. I think everyone wished for that for as long as possible but we are in a good way."

The reversal points to a breakdown in the final stages of negotiations rather than a sudden change of heart. Reports had previously indicated that the gap centred on the structure of a new deal, with Konate seeking higher guaranteed wages while Liverpool's offer was weighted towards performance incentives.

Real Madrid's interest has been consistent since earlier in the season. The Spanish champions had cooled their approach after a difficult run of form from Konate in the first half of the campaign, but his availability on a free transfer gives them renewed motivation. Chelsea and Bayern Munich have also been credited with interest.

Liverpool's new manager โ€” widely expected to be Andoni Iraola โ€” will inherit a defensive unit undergoing significant change. Andy Robertson has departed, Trent Alexander-Arnold left last summer and now Konate follows. The backline that delivered 20 Premier League titles under Klopp is being rebuilt from scratch.
