Miura found the net in the 52nd minute to make it 5-0 to Fukushima in an eventual 7-0 win over Iwaki Furukawa in the Emperor's Cup on Saturday, latching onto a cutback from team-mate Takatora Einaga to beat two defenders and slot home from close range. It was his first competitive goal since netting for Suzuka PG, now Atletico Suzuka, against FC Osaka in November 2022.
"It was a bit of a scramble, but what matters is that we were in the right spots, so I think we positioned ourselves well," Miura said afterwards.
"I wanted to live up to the expectations of everyone, including the coach who gave me the opportunity to play until that point.
"Above all, I was so happy that, even when we were already way ahead, the players, staff, and fans were all able to celebrate that one goal together with such joy."
Dubbed "King Kazu" in Japan, he is one of the country's most loved sportsmen and was the face of the J.League when it launched in 1993. He started his career with Brazilian side Santos in 1986 and has also played club football in Italy, Croatia, Australia and Portugal.
The forward's long career will enter a 42nd season after extending his loan at Fukushima from J2 League side Yokohama FC until June 2027. Miura signed for Yokohama in 2005 but has not played a minute for them since 2020.
He scored 55 goals in 89 games for Japan and has previously talked about playing into his 60s, a goal he now looks on course to achieve as he continues to defy the usual expectations of a career in professional football.
Miura joined Fukushima on loan at the end of December after a spell at fourth-tier Atletico Suzuka, where he made eight appearances without scoring as that club was relegated to Japan's regional leagues.
His return to scoring form is a welcome boost heading into a landmark year, with Japan's professional leagues switching from a spring-to-autumn calendar to an autumn-to-spring format, meaning Miura will enter his 60th year still playing professional football at the top levels of the domestic game.
