The 33-year-old Argentina international, fresh from winning the Europa League with Villa in Istanbul, has agreed in principle to a three-year contract with the Turin club and is understood to regard Juventus as his preferred destination for the next chapter of his career.
He is also prepared to accept a lower salary than his current earnings — reported by Sky Sport to be approximately €7 million per year — to make the move work financially.
Juventus made Martínez their priority goalkeeper target this summer after a deal for Liverpool's Alisson Becker collapsed. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the switch, reporting that talks with Aston Villa had already begun to establish the fee and contract framework. The alternative under consideration is Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, previously identified in earlier stories as a makeweight option in the Gleison Bremer negotiation.
The fee is the central obstacle. Italian outlet Sky Sport reports Villa are open to selling for as little as €10-15 million given Martínez's age and wages — a figure that Juventus are trying to negotiate down further. However, other sources including Fabrizio Romano have cited Villa's private expectations at closer to €40 million, with the club aware that replacing a World Cup-winning goalkeeper of Martínez's profile would require significant outlay.
There are further complications. Juventus will not be playing Champions League football next season, having finished outside the top four in Serie A. For a goalkeeper who won the World Cup in 2022 and the Copa América in 2024 and 2026 with Argentina, the absence of European football is a material consideration.
Martínez turns 34 in September. His contract with Villa runs until 2029. Villa's Europa League qualification this season gives the club further grounds to resist a sale on unfavourable terms.
The desire is mutual. The mechanics are not yet resolved.
