Julián Álvarez apologised to Atlético Madrid supporters after scoring the winner against Deportivo, acknowledging that his comments during the World Cup had upset fans who had backed him.

The Argentine striker scored the only goal in Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 victory at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Saturday, then addressed the supporters whose relationship with him had been strained by his remarks about wanting to leave the club.

“I wanted to apologise to our people for my words during the World Cup. They were a mistake, both in the way I said them and the timing. Above all, I understand the fans’ anger. I would have been angry too if I were a supporter, especially given how much they have backed me. They have been very generous, and I value that.”

Álvarez’s goal came at a significant moment for both player and club. Having also scored in Atlético’s midweek Champions League draw against Stuttgart, he found the net in consecutive matches after struggling for goals earlier in the campaign.

His finish proved decisive against Deportivo, with Atlético holding on for three points despite the visitors threatening an equaliser late in the game. Some supporters applauded Álvarez after his goal, offering a sign that the atmosphere around him may be beginning to change.

The forward was keen to acknowledge the support he had received from inside the dressing room as well as from the stands.

“I also want to thank the team because they have supported me during this time. I’m feeling better. I’m grateful to all my teammates for standing by me. I’m working to improve, and I feel better in recent matches, both physically and on the ball. I want to help the team and give my best.”

The dispute followed comments Álvarez made during the 2026 World Cup, when he expressed a desire to leave Atlético. The remarks angered supporters, particularly after the club resisted his departure and the possibility of a move to Barcelona became a source of tension.

Saturday’s goal did not erase that history, but Álvarez’s apology made clear that he recognised the effect his words had on the people who had supported him.

“When you feel good in life, it shows on the pitch. We’re professionals, of course, but everything has an influence. I feel good and ready to compete for everything.”

He also expressed hope that his performances and attitude could help rebuild the relationship with Atlético’s supporters.

“Hopefully, through hard work and humility, I can turn this situation around.”

Atlético coach Diego Simeone welcomed the apology, emphasising the importance of acknowledging mistakes.

“I value people who ask for forgiveness because it isn’t easy. Julián is a humble, hard-working lad who cares about his teammates, and I’m grateful for his apology because it puts him in the place where he belongs.”

For Álvarez, consecutive goals provide an encouraging response on the pitch. His next challenge is to sustain that form and continue earning back the confidence of the Atlético supporters.
