The former Liverpool midfielder believes his performance offered more than the post-match reaction suggested, pointing to his involvement in Inter’s attacking play during the defeat in Madrid.
“It’s fair that the fans have their opinions about my performances,” Jones said. “But when I look at the game in Madrid, I think I had the most shots. I created more than anyone else in the team, I was very involved. I hit the crossbar and almost scored.”
Jones acknowledged that supporters may judge his performance differently depending on the match they are comparing it with. He disagreed, however, with the criticism that followed the game against Real Madrid.
His comments come as he continues to establish himself at Inter following his move from Liverpool. The midfielder has yet to secure a regular starting place, and his contribution in the Spanish capital became a talking point after the result.
Jones also referred to Inter’s earlier meeting with Roma, arguing that the team had not necessarily played particularly well before scoring its opening goal. His point was that individual and collective performances cannot always be judged solely by the final result or a few isolated moments.
“There will be games when we all play well, me included, and score goals, and it will be a great feeling,” he said. “But there will also be teams against whom we won’t play so well.”
Rather than promise consistently impressive performances, Jones focused on the approach he intends to maintain when matches become difficult. He does not want criticism to make him reluctant to take responsibility or attempt ambitious passes and attacking actions.
“I can assure you that I will never be timid or scared. I don’t want to be a player who always has an easy way out. I want to take risks.”
That willingness to try things is central to the way Jones describes his game. He wants to influence matches by getting on the ball and attempting to create opportunities, even if some decisions do not come off.
For Inter Milan, the challenge is turning that intent into consistent performances as Jones works towards a more settled role. His response makes clear that he accepts supporters are entitled to their views, but does not believe the criticism after the Real Madrid match fully reflected his contribution.
