Jamal Musiala has suffered a muscle tear in his right thigh and will return to Bayern Munich after being ruled out of Germany’s Nations League campaign.

The 23-year-old was due to start Jürgen Klopp’s first match as Germany head coach against the Netherlands but withdrew during the warm-up after feeling a problem in his thigh.

Nadiem Amiri replaced Musiala in the starting XI before Germany drew 1-1 in Amsterdam.

The German Football Association later confirmed that Musiala had suffered a muscle fibre tear in his right thigh. He has now left the national team camp to begin his rehabilitation with Bayern.

Reports suggest the injury could keep him out for around three to four weeks, although the exact recovery period will depend on his rehabilitation.

The setback means Musiala will miss Sunday’s Nations League meeting with Greece, while Klopp will also be without Kai Havertz after the Arsenal forward suffered a thigh problem during the Netherlands match.

Musiala’s latest injury comes after a difficult period since suffering a serious knee injury at the 2025 Club World Cup.

He had been carefully managed by Bayern Munich and Germany, with Klopp previously confirming that Musiala was among a small group of players who would remain with the national team throughout the international break.

Klopp said Musiala’s latest problem was a conventional football injury and not connected to his previous health issues.

“It’s not good news, but somehow it’s also good news because it’s a normal football injury,” Klopp said after the draw.

The injury leaves Bayern facing another spell without one of their key attacking players, while Germany must prepare for their second Nations League fixture without Musiala.
