Jack Rudoni dedicated his goal to his grandmother, who is recovering in hospital after suffering a heart attack, as Coventry City marked their first home Premier League victory in 25 years with a 4-1 win over Newcastle United.

The midfielder opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute, setting Frank Lampard's side on their way to a landmark result that also delivered a second consecutive victory.

“She had a heart attack last week, she's stable and she'll be watching from hospital. I just wanted to dedicate this to her where she'll be watching from,” Rudoni told Sky Sports.

The occasion meant plenty to the Coventry player, who was delighted to help the club deliver such a significant result in front of their own supporters.

“It's a massive night for us, our first home Premier League win in 25 years. We're glad we could score four goals for the fans. We've just got to carry that on now into the next game. That's two wins on the bounce now.”

Coventry City had not made the start they wanted at home, but Rudoni believes the performance against Newcastle demonstrated what the team can achieve at their ground.

“Our first two home games didn't go how we wanted, we wanted to do it in front of the fans. We did it all last year in the Championship. We want to make this place a fortress and today showed we can do that.”

The midfielder also outlined some of the adjustments required after stepping up from the Championship to the Premier League. Coventry have had to adapt to facing stronger opposition and spending less time in possession, demanding a different approach from their players.

“There's a lot more quality, we don't have the ball as much, for me personally you have to adapt to maybe more second balls and working in the final third more. Those two wins have definitely given us confidence. We can't wait for Tottenham next week.”

Rudoni took responsibility for the penalty after recognising the opportunity when a teammate went down in the area. With several of Coventry's usual penalty takers off the pitch, he was determined to take it himself.

“As soon as he went down I wanted it. A few penalty takers weren't on the pitch. I said to the lads this one is mine.”

His confidence reflects a journey through the divisions that Rudoni believes has been built on patience and faith in his own ability. Rather than viewing his progress as a sudden breakthrough, he sees each achievement as another step towards the next target.

“It's been a long journey, I'm the type of person that believes in myself, it was only a matter of time. It's step by step, once I achieve one achievement I'm onto the next.”

Coventry's victory lifted them out of the relegation zone and gave Lampard's side further encouragement as they look to establish themselves in the top flight. Rudoni's goal helped launch the performance, but the night also carried a personal meaning that made the result particularly memorable for the midfielder.
