The 27-year-old Uruguay international joined Liverpool on a season-long loan from Barcelona in August, with an option for the Premier League club to make the deal permanent, reportedly for around €55 million.
He has started the campaign at a high level, and comments from his new manager suggest Liverpool are pleased with what they have seen. Iraola's Premier League campaign began on 23 August away to Newcastle United, with Araújo arriving shortly before it.
Speaking at Friday's press conference, Iraola said of Araújo:
"I'm very happy for him. He needed this change and he has arrived with humility, at a big club, as an experienced player and ready to play in several positions.
"I like his spirit; now I'm pushing him to learn the language so we can take advantage of all his experience."
Hansi Flick confirmed the move himself, and fellow Uruguayan Darwin Núñez, a former Liverpool forward, wished him well. Araújo was made Barcelona captain as recently as January, but his on-pitch role had narrowed under Flick, who preferred Pau Cubarsí and Eric García at the back. He was restricted to 16 starts in all competitions last season and 17 the year before.
That helps explain why Iraola's description of a player who "needed this change" carries weight. Araújo spent seven years at Camp Nou, making 213 appearances and winning eight major honours in Spain, including three LaLiga titles.
Liverpool viewed his versatility as a key attraction. The defender can play at centre-back and at right-back, and Iraola was looking for cover in both areas after injuries in his squad.
The reported buy option runs to 2027, meaning Liverpool can wait for a full season of evidence before deciding whether to commit to a permanent transfer. The option is not an obligation, and Liverpool are paying Araújo's wages for the 2026-27 campaign.
Iraola's remarks about pushing Araújo to learn English so that his experience can be fully used has been suggested as a hint that Liverpool are thinking beyond this season.
