Several Inter Milan players are out of contract at the end of next season, but the Serie A champions have moved to secure one key figure in their midfield.

The club confirmed on Wednesday that both goalkeeper Yann Sommer and centre-back Francesco Acerbi will leave when their contracts expire.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, 37, was also into the final months of his current deal, but his time at the Italian giants is not yet over.

Inter Milan announced on their official website that the Armenian midfielder has signed a new contract running until the summer of 2027.

The extension means Mkhitaryan will extend his stay at the club further, with next season set to be his fifth at Inter.

Since arriving at the club, Mkhitaryan has scored 12 goals and provided 21 assists in 187 competitive matches.

Earlier in his career, the midfielder had spells at Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, Arsenal, Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Mkhitaryan won the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017, scoring in the final against Ajax in Stockholm to become the first Armenian player to win a major European trophy.

He joined Inter on a free transfer from Roma in the summer of 2022 and has since won the Serie A title twice with the club, as well as reaching the Champions League final on two occasions.

Mkhitaryan has also won 95 caps for Armenia at international level, scoring 32 goals and providing 25 assists for his country.

Raffaele Di Gennaro and Matteo Darmian are on expiring contracts at Inter, and it remains to be seen whether the pair will stay at the club beyond this season.

Inter won the Serie A title last season, and Mkhitaryan's continued presence in the squad will be viewed as an important source of experience as the club looks to defend its crown.

The midfielder has become a trusted figure under successive coaching regimes at the San Siro since his arrival, valued for his versatility across midfield positions as well as his leadership in the dressing room.

His new deal ensures Inter retain a player who has featured prominently in the club's recent domestic success, even as the futures of several team-mates remain unresolved heading into the summer.

Mkhitaryan's extension comes at a time when Inter are also assessing their goalkeeping and defensive options following the departures of Sommer and Acerbi.
