The honorary president of the German record champions made the comments in a wide-ranging interview with DAZN ahead of Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, in which Bayern Munich host the Parisian side aiming to defend their continental title.
On the question of what might eventually come after Kompany, Hoeneß pointed without hesitation in one direction.
"He is at least a candidate."
The 43-year-old Sebastian Hoeneß has managed VfB Stuttgart since April 2023, winning the DFB-Pokal in 2025. He previously worked in Bayern Munich's academy structure, coaching the under-19s and reserve team before building his senior reputation in the Bundesliga.
The timing of the remark was notable. Stuttgart face Bayern in the DFB-Pokal final in Berlin on 23 May, meaning Hoeneß effectively put his nephew forward as a Kompany successor 18 days before the pair will meet as direct opponents for a trophy.
His praise for the current incumbent was equally effusive. Kompany has led Bayern to back-to-back Bundesliga titles and has the club within one match of a first Champions League final appearance since 2023.
"He has made every single player better. What he has managed to achieve — turning 15, 16, 18 very good individual players into a cohesive team — I attribute entirely to our manager."
He placed Sebastian Hoeneß directly behind Kompany in his personal ranking.
"After our manager, Sebastian has my greatest respect. What he has achieved at that club is remarkable."
Kompany is periodically linked with a return to England, with speculation about a potential move to Manchester City should Pep Guardiola depart. For now, the Allianz Arena is where he wants to be — and where Hoeneß, despite his forward planning, clearly wants him to stay.
