Hendry draws on Saudi experience as Scotland acclimatise to Florida heat ahead of World Cup

Scotland defender Jack Hendry has emerged as an unlikely expert in tropical preparation as the squad work through World Cup acclimatisation week at Inter Miami's training ground in Florida โ€” with ice barrels defining their preparation.

The 31-year-old, who has spent the past three seasons at Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, was noticeably less overwhelmed than team-mates as temperatures and humidity levels tested the majority of the squad to their limits on Tuesday.

"Stay hydrated," was his opening counsel when asked by BBC Scotland for advice, speaking from the squad's hotel in Fort Lauderdale.

"It's about maintaining fluids, making sure you're very concentrated because you can lose a lot of sweat in the humidity. The game can be a little bit different because you maybe can't run about as much, getting tired very quickly and energy going from you, so it definitely impacts."

Hendry also addressed the practical value of water breaks โ€” a feature that will be in operation during Scotland's matches โ€” noting their dual tactical and physical benefit.

"They're certainly going to help us from a recovery point of view, but maybe tactical as well. I'm accustomed to it in Saudi โ€” we have these water breaks and it might disrupt the rhythm of the game a wee bit, but from the players' point of view it definitely helps."

Head coach Steve Clarke has been explicit about the purpose of the week, stressing acclimatisation as the primary objective ahead of a group stage that sees Scotland face Haiti in Miami, Morocco in Boston, and Brazil back in Miami โ€” potentially in conditions that could define the outcome of each match.

Scotland have never progressed beyond the group stage at a World Cup. This squad has consistently spoken of changing that. Hendry, with characteristic pragmatism, offered the most measured version of that ambition.

"It's just trying to get as far as possible. The main ambition is going to be trying to get out of the group. We can't look too far ahead, just take it game by game โ€” and if we do that, enjoy it and play the best we can, then we should be able to achieve that."

Scotland's opening fixture is against Bolivia this Saturday in a pre-tournament friendly.
