Real Madrid began their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 win over Inter Milan, Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde scoring before Thibaut Courtois held out for a nervy finish after Carlos Augusto pulled one back.
Cristian Chivu felt his Inter Milan side had shown the right spirit in defeat, while José Mourinho described a "crazy" contest that could easily have finished with twice as many goals.
"I've seen a team that had the ball and personality, knowing what Real Madrid represents. I trust that things are working, and I also accept the mistakes. We showed the right attitude, taking more risks. We got into their box many times. I take pride that we didn't come here to speculate," Chivu said.
"We're the team that scored more than 100 goals last season. Today we created chances; sooner or later we'll finish them better. I trust the players' determination. I'm not worried."
He also praised goalkeeper Josep MartĂnez.
"I'll remember his reaction and personality. What was interesting is that he came under real pressure. It's never easy, and he put in a great performance."
Asked what he took from the night, Chivu said: "That we have to keep going like this. Know how to pick ourselves up. That's what stays with me from tonight, and it's what I'm trying to do."
Mourinho relished the chaos of the occasion.
"It could have finished 6-5, 6-6... a crazy game. A madness I don't like. I'd rather score 5, 6, 7 and not need a totally incredible goalkeeper. If Courtois wasn't chosen MVP today, he never will be," he said. "I don't want to take credit away from Fede. There are things I'd have liked to do, like making changes earlier.
"Inter's intensity dropped and we didn't have enough people to help us control the game. Valverde's goal wasn't a coincidence, it was a great reading from him and from us. We played a great team, our midfield wanted to do more but couldn't. Three very important points. I'm convinced we're going to qualify."
Asked about the whistles aimed at VinĂcius JĂșnior, Mourinho defended his forward.
"I'm not criticising the fans, I'm speaking as a coach about my relationship with him. He deserves all my respect. He's not at his best, we all see that, but he knows it too. He's working harder than ever to be the VinĂcius who decides matches. The few times he couldn't defend, it was fatigue. It isn't easy, but he's given a very good effort. I have enormous respect for this VinĂcius. The moment will come when he decides games."
