Coventry City have completed the signing of midfielder Gustavo Hamer from Sheffield United on a long-term contract, for a fee reported by the BBC to be in the region of £6 million.
The 29-year-old spent three seasons at the Sky Blues before his move to Bramall Lane in 2023, scoring 19 goals in 132 appearances and picking up the club's player of the year award in 2021-22. He returns having since won the Championship player of the season prize in 2024-25 and sampled Premier League football with the Blades in 2023-24, when he scored four goals in 36 top-flight appearances.
"To go to the Premier League with Coventry was something I always dreamt of so when the club came back in for me, it was very special so I'm very happy," Hamer said.
"The love I got from the fans was amazing so the only thing I can give back to them is goals, assists and a good performance so that's what I will try to do.
"Of course, you can't score or give an assist every game but what I can do is give 100% for the badge, for the club and for the fans."
A former Netherlands youth international who came through Feyenoord and PEC Zwolle before moving to English football, Hamer scored 22 goals and provided 29 assists in 123 appearances across all competitions during his time with Sheffield United.
Hamer's return arrives alongside separate reports that Coventry are among the clubs monitoring Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk, who is available for loan after his doping ban was overturned this summer.
Manager Frank Lampard managed Mudryk during his second spell at Stamford Bridge and is understood to have made contact over a temporary deal, with at least two other Premier League clubs also known to have made enquiries.
Chelsea are weighing up whether to keep Mudryk involved under Xabi Alonso or send him out for regular football, with French side Strasbourg, part of the same ownership group as Chelsea, also under consideration as a destination. Should Coventry win the race, it would represent Lampard's second piece of transfer business this window built on a personal relationship from his time in west London, following the arrival of Hamer under altogether different circumstances.
Coventry are already well into their summer rebuild ahead of a return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence, having added Frank Onyeka, Aurele Amenda, Loum Tchaouna, Caleb Yirenkyi and Carl Rushworth on permanent deals.
