Manchester City have confirmed Pep Guardiola will leave the club after Sunday's final match, with the newly developed North Stand named in his honour for his farewell against Aston Villa.

The North Stand, which has been fully developed over the past two seasons as part of the club's stadium expansion programme, will open in its completed form for the first time on Sunday. Naming it after Guardiola is the club's most tangible act of recognition for what he has given them across a decade.

Guardiola spoke with characteristic directness when addressing his departure.

"Don't ask me the reasons I'm leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it's my time. Nothing is eternal, if it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City."

The confirmation comes three days after City were denied the Premier League title by Arsenal, who were confirmed champions following Manchester City's 1-1 draw at Bournemouth on Tuesday night.

The loss of the championship, combined with the FA Cup and League Cup already secured, means Guardiola ends his tenure with 20 major honours β€” 17 at club level, having won three league titles in Spain and Germany before joining City in 2016.

Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who served as Guardiola's first-team assistant during the 2022-23 treble-winning campaign, is the frontrunner to succeed him, with a deal understood to be in place contingent on the formal confirmation of Guardiola's departure.

Guardiola will leave as the most successful manager in Manchester City's history by a considerable margin, having inherited a club that had won two Premier League titles and left one that has six. The open-top bus parade celebrating the Carabao Cup and FA Cup will take place in Manchester following Sunday's match β€” his final act as head coach before closing one of the most remarkable chapters in English football.
