Gomez started at right-back after Jeremie Frimpong was ruled out โ the Dutch defender's 22nd separate injury this season โ and was one of the players who found Aston Villa's movement most difficult to deal with on a night when set-pieces and individual errors proved critical.
"Yeah, in so many ways. We cost ourselves a big opportunity today. We know that. It sums up our year, with it being in our hands and errors that are avoidable at pivotal points in the game where we could have got momentum. At the end of the day, it's still in our hands. The goal remains the same. We've just got to do the job next week now."
He acknowledged the defensive organisation around Villa's set-piece routines โ which produced the opening goal from Morgan Rogers after a corner worked back to the edge of the area โ had been identified in the build-up.
"It felt we had control. It's just frustrating because it's lapses in concentration. They're great at set-pieces. They've got a reputation for doing routines and doing things outside the box, and we knew that. We had to be focused."
On the long wait before the final game.
"It's a long week. Obviously we've got a lot of injuries but we've got to band together. We know we have to give the supporters something to support in how we play and how we approach the game. Hopefully we end the season on a positive note."
The result moved Villa three points clear of Liverpool in fourth. Virgil van Dijk scored both Liverpool goals โ a first-half leveller and a late consolation โ but Ollie Watkins (twice) and John McGinn ensured the Midlands side's return to the Champions League after finishing sixth last season.
Liverpool now face a straightforward equation: win against Brentford and they are in the top five regardless of other results. Defeat or a draw could see Bournemouth overtake them if the Cherries beat Nottingham Forest.
