Joe Gomez has cast doubt over his Liverpool future, admitting he has no clarity over whether he will stay at the club beyond this summer with one year remaining on his contract.

Gomez spoke to the media after Saturday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Anfield, where he came on as a substitute, and was direct about a situation that has become increasingly uncertain.

"I think anything can happen. I don't know is the honest answer. I've only got a year left on my contract. Whatever's meant to be will be, but I'm so grateful to have had this time here at this club. I always will be grateful to have had 11 years at a place like this. All I can do is be thankful and we'll see."

Jeremy Jacquet's arrival, which was agreed in January with Rennes, changes Gomez's position significantly. With Ibrahima KonatΓ© in contract extension talks and loanee Giovanni Leoni expected to return for preseason, Gomez will face fierce competition for minutes even if he stays. AC Milan and Newcastle United have both previously registered their interest in him.

He was asked about the booing from sections of the Anfield crowd β€” a recurring theme in a disappointing season that has seen Liverpool fail to defend the Premier League title and exit every domestic cup competition.

"It just is a summary of our year and it's a reaction to the whole year β€” and that's fair enough. The fans pay their hard-earned money to come and watch us and they're entitled to show their frustration, in the same way they cheer us."

He was candid about what the fanbase expects and why the season has fallen short of it.

"This place comes with a lot of expectation and pressure and that takes time to understand and really get a full picture of. Being passive in any sense is not what I know and no one wants to see."

He made clear the immediate priority regardless of his own situation.

"Black and white thing now β€” we need Champions League football, that's the objective. We get that, we dust ourselves off and we go again."

Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic for Β£3.5million in 2015. His eleven years on Merseyside have produced the Champions League, two Premier League titles and the FA Cup β€” alongside extended injury absences that have prevented him ever fully commanding a starting berth. Whether the twelfth year happens at Liverpool or elsewhere will be known once the season ends.
