The Nigerian suffered a brutal challenge from Monaco's Christian Mawissa during a pre-season friendly on Thursday, and while initial assessments pointed only to bruising, follow-up scans revealed a far graver picture: his kneecap was displaced, several ligaments were torn and his meniscus was affected, meaning he will require surgery and a lengthy recovery.
The initial diagnosis had offered some hope of a less severe outcome, with the swelling and a drawer test suggesting the injury might not be as serious as first feared, but the final results confirmed the worst-case scenario.
With Uche having returned to Getafe only after Crystal Palace opted not to trigger the mandatory buy option in his loan deal, given his lack of Premier League minutes, the club must now find a way to cover for a player they had been counting on this season, and will likely have to move again in the market before the window closes.
The blow came on the same day Getafe confirmed the loan signing of Belgium international Orel Mangala from Lyon, strengthening a midfield that lost both Luis Milla and Mauro Arambarri over the summer.
The 28-year-old, who arrived in the Spanish capital only hours before the announcement, joins for the season and will line up alongside Mario Martín and Ramón Terrats, with the futures of Yvan Neyou and Javi Muñoz, neither of whom has featured in pre-season, still to be resolved.
