Getafe have confirmed the permanent signing of Mario Martín from Real Madrid, activating the purchase option included in last summer's loan agreement and tying the 22-year-old defensive midfielder to the club until June 2030.

The official announcement was made on Getafe's website on Thursday, with the club stating that an agreement had been reached with Real Madrid for the permanent transfer. El Chiringuito reported that Madrid will receive €3.5 million for 50 per cent of the player's registration rights — meaning Madrid retain the remaining half, a standard mechanism the club uses when selling academy graduates to preserve a future sell-on entitlement.

Martín joined Getafe on a season-long loan last August having spent the previous campaign at Real Valladolid in LaLiga, where he made 30 appearances following his relegation with the club. He came through Madrid's Castilla academy system, wearing the captain's armband in his final year at reserve level, and made four senior first-team appearances for Real Madrid before his development path led him to the lower half of LaLiga's table.

At Getafe, under head coach José Bordalas — the experienced defensive tactician known for producing some of LaLiga's most abrasive and committed pressing units — Martín thrived in his natural role as a defensive midfielder. He made 35 league appearances this season, contributing two goals and one assist and establishing himself as one of the most important players in the squad. Getafe president Ángel Torres had already signalled in March that the purchase would be triggered.

"Mario Martín is definitely staying," Torres told Mundo Deportivo at the time. "He is performing well and there is an agreement with Real Madrid. What we will do is exercise the option."

Martín has represented Spain at Under-21 level and remains on the radar of Luis de la Fuente's senior setup for the next international cycle. He is the latest in a long line of Madrid academy graduates — including Fran García, who returned to the club after time at Rayo Vallecano — to leave the Bernabéu and thrive in a lower-profile LaLiga environment before their profile rises again.

Whether Madrid's 50 per cent retention reflects a genuine long-term plan to reacquire him depends on how the next two seasons unfold.
