Barcelona midfielder Gavi says Real Madrid will always try to belittle his club's achievements and has urged sporting director Deco to avoid signings who arrive with a star mentality.

The 21-year-old spoke to El Mundo Deportivo in a wide-ranging interview in which he reflected on back-to-back La Liga titles, addressed the Fede Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni altercation at Real Madrid, and declared himself fully fit and ready for the World Cup after recovering from a serious knee injury.

On Barcelona's title, Gavi was direct about the outside noise and the character of what the club has achieved.

"Everyone knows that from Madrid they will always undervalue or take merit away from things we win or our titles. It has a lot of merit to win two leagues in a row with many players from the academy, many from La Masía and without many signings. In the end, it has been very few signings."

He also admitted he secretly wanted Madrid to beat Espanyol in the final round of the previous season so that Barcelona could beat them on their own ground.

"If I'm honest, I wanted Madrid to beat Espanyol so we could beat them at our stadium and with our fans. And so it was. Much better for me."

When asked about the reported physical confrontation between Valverde and Tchouaméni at Madrid's training ground, Gavi offered a pointed assessment of how it was handled.

"If they came to blows, the manager should not have made him (Tchouameni) play. If it is true that they came to blows, for me he made a mistake by calling him up and making him play. But I don't know the truth of what happened."

His message to Deco on the transfer market was equally clear.

"That they are there for and by the team is the most important thing. And that they don't come with a star mentality or acting superior, because that doesn't help. We have to all be together and row in the same direction, as we have been doing these two years. Whoever comes, that is the only thing I want — that they are there for the team and help as much as possible."

On his own fitness after a knee injury that kept him out for much of last season, Gavi was emphatic.

"I feel better than ever. I have shown it in this last month in the important games. I feel more prepared than ever and hopefully I can go to the World Cup."
