Steffen Freund knows talent when he sees it — and he says Nick Woltemade has all the tools to be a superstar… if he can survive the Premier League grind.

The former Germany and Borussia Dortmund midfielder, who also played in England with Tottenham, is full of praise for the young German striker.

“He is an incredible player,” Freund told Football Presse. “Not just football-wise, but his character too. A pleasure to be around.”

The 24-year-old caused a stir last summer when he swapped VfB Stuttgart for Newcastle United, landing in the Premier League after a brilliant spell in the Bundesliga. Freund says his quick learning and intelligence set him apart.

“He learns unbelievably fast. Give him four or five games and he can reach that level,” he said.

Woltemade’s first season in England has been a rollercoaster. He started brightly but goals have dried up, and he’s been moved around the pitch as he adapts to the pace and physicality of English football.

“Football is different in England,” Freund added. “But if he is clever and grows into it, he can be a big player.”

The former midfielder sees the tactical versatility as a huge plus.

“Whether he stays up front or drifts deeper, he has something special. He just needs the right chance to show it.”

Freund is convinced the potential was always there — now it’s up to Woltemade to make the Premier League his stage.

“Give him time. He’s going to be one to watch.”
