Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin has been approached to join a consortium exploring a minority stake purchase in Liverpool, according to Sky News, joining Amazon founder Jeff Bezos among the wealthy individuals being courted for the deal.

The investment group is being led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, who resigned as a co-owner and former chairman of QPR earlier this week after 18 seasons with the West London club.

Fenway Sports Group confirmed the approach in a statement to the Financial Times, saying: "An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."

Saverin, who helped launch Facebook alongside fellow Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 before leaving the company acrimoniously, is now worth an estimated $32.4 billion, ranking him 59th on the Forbes rich list. Now based in Singapore, he runs venture capital firm B Capital and has previous experience in football investment, having been part of an unsuccessful consortium that attempted to buy Chelsea in 2022.

Bezos, meanwhile, has never previously pursued a Premier League club, though he has been linked with NFL ownership bids in the past and has been seen socialising with LeBron James, an FSG shareholder and Liverpool supporter.

The consortium is reportedly discussing a deal for around 30% of Liverpool, which would require an investment in the region of $1.8 billion given reported valuations of the club at more than $6 billion.

It is not yet known whether Saverin has responded to the approach, though his involvement alongside Bezos would bring considerable financial firepower to a bid FSG says remains at an early, exploratory stage. The interest comes as FSG also works on other fronts, including Liverpool's pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola this summer.

FSG has owned Liverpool since 2010 and last sold a stake in the club in 2023, when Dynasty Equity purchased a small share valuing the club at around $4.5 billion. Under the Boston-based group's ownership, Liverpool have won multiple domestic and European trophies, though last season's fifth-place finish and the decision to sack head coach Arne Slot in May caused unease among some supporters.

It remains unclear whether a minority stake sale could eventually pave the way for a fuller sale of the club.
