Robinson, now head of youth recruitment at Southampton, told Football Presse that Elliott and Bellingham were “neck and neck” during their teenage years in England’s youth setup.
“The answer to Jude Bellingham would have been Ben Elliott,” Robinson said. “They grew up in the same age group… very, very similar players.”
Elliott, now playing for Reading, saw his trajectory disrupted by a series of setbacks that ultimately separated the two careers.
“Ben had a number of misfortunes… he picked up an illness on a tournament in Holland and was seriously ill for a long time,” Robinson explained. “Then he had a really bad broken ankle… but he was the one who was neck and neck with Jude.”
Chelsea, meanwhile, made a serious attempt to land Bellingham from Birmingham City before his move to Borussia Dortmund in 2020.
“Chelsea tried really hard to sign Jude Bellingham. Really hard,” Robinson said. “But the club needed to go a bit further on the money… and he needed to know there was a first-team pathway.”
That pathway proved decisive, with Dortmund offering both opportunity and development, paving the way for his rise to Real Madrid and England stardom.
Robinson also recalled scouting Bellingham’s early breakthrough, including a first live viewing during a cup tie.
“I remember going to watch him when he made his first-team debut… he came off the bench and he looked like he belonged,” he said. “He wasn’t fazed by men’s football… you think, yeah, he can deal with bigger occasions.”
The scout emphasised that Bellingham’s mentality stood out as much as his technical ability.
“Technically very good, athletically very good… but it was the way he just got on with the game,” Robinson added. “He wasn’t a difficult one to write a good report on.”
Robinson also highlighted the importance of character in elite development, pointing to players like Reece James, Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher as examples.
“The lads who are going to succeed have to have that edge,” he said. “Do they want it? If they lose the ball, do they win it back? That was never a problem with Jude.”
While Bellingham has gone on to become one of world football’s elite midfielders, Robinson’s insight underlines how fine the margins can be—and how different fortunes can shape even the brightest young careers.
